Creations My piece for "And Then There Was Her" group exhibition by the Re-Write Collective. Where a group of female identifying artist were asked to re-write a mythical misogynistic tale through their art. Psyche and Cupid We are all familiar with the baby faced Greek God Cupid... muscular, winged and curly haired. Shooting his bow and arrow at unassuming humans and gods alike to fall in love. But an important ‘love’ story involving him is overlooked. The Myth in Brief … Psyche was known as the king's most beautiful daughter and could only be saved by her beauty if her father took her to a mountain to be married by an evil man. Cupid was seen as heroic for not striking her with his arrow and whisking Psyche away in the dark, holding her hostage in a remote area to allow him to sleep with *cough rape cough* her nightly. In order to find out his identity she shone an oil lamp on him whilst he was sleeping , he woke startled and she accidentally burned him with the oil. He was pissed and flew off to wherever gods go when they are pissed off. Magically Psyche had now fallen madly in love with him, so she would go through a load of impossible tasks set by his jealous Mum, to allow them to be together. Ending with another story of a woman not being able to help herself, tempted by seeing the beauty of the underworld in a box, she falls into a deep sleep from a dark spell … to be rescued by her winged god Cupid. They lived happily ever after, the end. Ptshhhh okay then! This story has so many flaws on so many different levels. Psyche deserves for her story to be retold, and that’s what I intend to do. My Re-Write : Psyche was not strikingly beautiful to the naked eye, her beauty went deep beyond the grounds of what we associate with beauty. She is an essence, an aura people could feel around them. Many would shy away from this, their fear caused many to reject her. Cupid was the son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. This elevated him in his social class with his peers and often felt a huge pressure to please and impress his mother. Love for Cupid was not often mutual, it was something he wanted to own but could never find what he was searching for. Cupid had heard about the elusive Psyche and wanted to find out more, how could a woman not be interested in men? Why had she turned away so many potential mates and why was she so damn attractive but couldn’t put a finger on why. She had to be his. Cupid hatched many plans to make Psyche fall for him, but none seemed to be making her notice him. Psyche had noticed Cupid, she always had but knew his ways and didn’t want to be used for his own pleasure. But she wanted to understand why her, she did not understand her true power yet. After months of Cupid’s romantic gestures, psyche confronted him. They spoke deeply and honestly about why he felt the need to impress her in such a way and she told him this did not feel authentic. Cupid was so shocked that what everything he had been told to believe about love shattered before him. Psyche felt this vulnerability and another side to Cupid, so decided to give him a chance. It wasn’t long before he began to feel the pressures of the other males questioning why he had changed. His mum disapproving of his match and introducing him to potential partners continuously. And why wouldn’t she sleep with him yet? This also began to project into their relationship, he felt his masculinity being challenged and found the world just so tempting. Psyche always kept her calm and was great at communicating her feelings, especially through the arts. But this grew Cupid’s frustrations further and he wanted to be loud and to be seen. Soon things became nasty, he would tell her she was not so beautiful and she would never find a match like him again. This is her only chance to fulfil her destiny as a woman, and she would lead a good life with him. Psyche felt like her world was getting smaller, her art began to suffer or not materialise at all. Feeling low and lacking in confidence she began to doubt the voice that always felt so true. He would constantly threat to leave her, by this point she felt so dependant on him she wouldn’t know what to do without him. She decided to spend the night with him, perhaps this would make him stay. They kept the lights off, it was quick and far from intimate. His sexual desires soon became another tool for control and manipulation. Soon the voice began to speak again, this is wrong! You do not deserve this! Psyche could not ignore the overwhelming emotions building louder and louder, her art became expressive and expansive. Until one day she felt the power and courage inside her, ready to make the jump into the unknown, past uncomfortability. She left that night and never looked back. Realising her true freedom, Psyche began her journey, within. She did not need a partner for this, simply the essence she held all along. But soon discovered this essence was within everyone, even Cupid. She acknowledged this and forgave him. This forgiveness released both of them free from resentment. Psyche lived a fruitful life, helping other women find their light. Symbolism: Addressing issues in many relationships, the oil lamp is now in the form of gaslighting. In one way, Cupid experiences this through toxic masculinity and pressure from friends/family. Which then projects into their relationship, using manipulation to cause Psyche to doubt herself and feel like she cannot leave him. Feeling trapped mentally opposed to physically in a remote location in the dark, this is how her world began to feel. Meaning her self expression was hindered. I wanted her use of art to be a way of conveying how this can help as a self-therapeutic technique for getting back in touch with blocked emotions. Psyche is simply the personification of the human spirit, both passions and misfortunes, leads to her ‘enlightenment’. I intend to use themes of butterflies in my submission, similarly to mythology and many other traditions. They symbolise the soul and change/cycles. Psyche had to experience yet elevate herself from earthly attachments in order to connect with her spirit. A change in perspective is all she needed. Experiencing gaslighting and manipulation myself in a past relationship, I wanted to show firstly that situations like this does not make the women a victim nor are we then defined by this. Each experience is a chance for growth and change is perspective, for us to connect with our inner psyche. As much as a villain the male in this scenario can seem, it’s also about looking through this and into the why. If we do not give others a chance to heal or to feel forgiveness, not only does this still have a weighty hold on ourselves, it will never break the cycle. I also had the pleasure of holding a workshop at Shine - a not-for-profit charity offering free education and meals for families that live in poverty. The objective for the workshop was to inspire the school-children to create fearlessly, the name of the art-form being “Chaotism”. We express together and spark each other’s imagination. We started by setting up giant sheets of paper taped along the floor and walls and handed out aprons. Then armed the students with crayons to provoke a first layer of chaos. Once a solid coating of crayon was established, we introduced new materials and tools. Since we didn’t speak the same language, we communicated with hand gestures to show them on the paper- there were no rules! A variety of vibrant paints and materials were provided and we encouraged the children to use their hands to paint too.
